FAQ

Here are some of the answers to some of the common questions that we receive:

What is the difference between mable and granite?

Marble tends to have a softer look, however some granites resemble the marble physical feature. The best way to describe their differences is by their durability and porosity. Granite is a very hard resistant stone, thus making it ideal for kitchen use, and it is low maintenance. Marble can be used in kitchens, but because it's main component is calcium, they require higher maintenance since it can be affected by acids such as vinegar and citrus juices.

Are stone products damaged by heat or cold?

Some natural stone products are more sensitive to heat than others. A hot pan with boiling water will not affect granite, but a frying pan with hot boiling oil, may discolor the surface. It is always a good idea to use trivets or heat pads under pans or cooking dishes just removed from the oven or stove. Extreme cold usually doesn't affect the surface of the stone. As a precaution, use coasters under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or other citrus juices since many common foods or drinks contain acids that will dull the stone surface.

Can I use the granite countertop as a chopping board?

Granite is the least susceptible of all to scratches. It is the second hardest natural stone next to diamond and holds its luster for ever. However, because granite is harder than your knives blades, it will dull them very quickly, so it is best to use a cutting board while cutting. Also, before they can be used as a preparation surface for raw food, it needs to be sealed.

Is it necessary to seal granite?

All stone, even granite, is porous to some degree and will end up absorbing stains over time. It is important to use a penetrating sealer to prevent stains from oil, wine or other liquids from soaking into the surface. We seal the granite upon installation. Following that you should seal the stone after six months and again a year after installation. After the one year anniversary granite should be sealed once a year.

Is it difficult to seal the granite?

Sealing granite is easier than polishing furniture. Simply spray on the sealer and wipe off with a soft cloth. There's virtually no scrubbing or buffing involved and a quart of the sealing solution will literally last a very long time.

What is the best way to clean granite, marble and other natural stones?

The old rule of thumb is never use anything you wouldn't use on your hands (under normal circumstances). Never use powdered cleansers or abrasive pads to clean your stone. Even the soft scrub types contain some pumice, which might damage your stone countertops, and /or floors. Never use any acidic products like ammonia, vinegar, or lemon juice or glass cleaners. Also, thoroughly rinse and dry the surface after washing.

Are stone products covered by a warranty?

Stone products fabricated and installed by NCM are warranted for workmanship. Damages such as discoloration caused by spills, any cracks, chips or breakage caused by excessive force are not covered by our warranty.
